A 12-year-old girl from South Africa's Eastern Cape gave birth at Frontier Hospital in Komani on January 1st, sparking concerns from local authorities. Eastern Cape Social Development MEC, Bukiwe Fanta, expressed outrage over the incident, emphasizing that the person responsible for impregnating the child must face legal consequences.
“Anyone who impregnates minors will be held accountable and jailed,” Fanta said, reinforcing the need to combat the victimization of children and prevent such incidents.
On the same day, Fanta visited Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in Mdantsane and encountered a heartbreaking case of a newborn girl abandoned in a plastic bag near a bridge in Unit P, Mdantsane. The baby was quickly taken into protective custody and provided with the necessary medical care.
Fanta assured the public that the safety and well-being of vulnerable children remain a top priority. "We are committed to ensuring that all children are cared for in a safe environment," she said, noting that social workers are assessing the situation to ensure the child receives appropriate support and care. She also highlighted the pressing issues some families face, which can lead to desperate actions like child abandonment. "We urge anyone struggling to care for their children to seek assistance," Fanta stated. "Our department offers various support services, including counseling, parenting programs, and crisis resources."
Fanta further encouraged community members to stay alert and support those in need, advising them to contact local social services to help families facing difficulties.
On New Year's Day, Fanta also visited Cecilia Makiwane and Bhisho hospitals, where a total of 11 newborns were recorded.
